@_bnovakova spent semester in Sweden at Umeå University and shared with us experiences from her exchange! 🇸🇪
The best:
✨ Kindness and respect:
Swedes are full of kindness and respect not only for other people, but also for nature and wildlife. This type of behaviour is very close to my heart. They like to just spend time outdoors with their loved ones and they try hard enough to sort their trash and not waste.
✨ Weather and daylight:
The weather there is completely different and I experienced a winter I never dreamed of. Snow and frost in April are no exception. Don’t worry, your body will adapt easily and you will surely love this winter fairy tale like I did! And the darkness and long days are a great challenge, believe me you will start to appreciate the little things around you more!
✨ Growth:
Everyone talked about personal growth as part of studying abroad. It sounded almost cliché to me. But the truth is that in those few months, the place, the culture, the people, the free rental of sports equipment (haha, it’s called Fritidsbanken, you’re welcome) and just everything, something changes in you. You just have to be open to it and let things flow. One of the most powerful changes is to not complain about anything and start doing, and that’s the Swedish mentality.
The worst:
❌ Coffee:
Although Swedes can’t resist fika (coffee time) and usually have filtered coffee everywhere as an “all you can drink”, the truth is you won’t enjoy it much, it’s not tasty. If you are a coffee lover, you will suffer a lot!
❌ Public transport:
On the coldest days, it’s nice to use public transport to shorten the journey in the freezing cold. The fact is that it’s expensive, so you’ll start walking/cycling a lot and you’ll miss public transport in Prague. On the other hand, 20 000 steps a day is the minimum, so your body will thank you!
❌ Ice and injuries:
Ice is everywhere and it only takes a moment. Anti skid shoe covers are great equipment, and if you don’t have them, it’s good to be careful. I ran a race on the frozen Baltic Sea without any problems and unfortunately in the spring I fell on the way back from cross-country skiing and ended up with a dislocated rib.
